Q: Who may file a complaint with the OIG?

A: Anyone, including employees of the MTA or its constituent agencies or of companies that do business with them, as well as representatives of those companies or members of the public.

Q: What kind of complaints does OIG investigate?

A: In order to have the best possible transportation system we encourage you to help us identify abuse, fraud and service deficiencies, including deficiencies in the maintenance and operation of facilities relating to the MTA and its constituent agencies. We also encourage you to help us identify areas in which performance might be improved, operating or maintenance inefficiencies overcome or corrected, and available funds used more effectively.

Q: How do I file a complaint with the OIG?

A: A complaint can be registered with the OIG in several ways. Anyone can complete and submit the complaint form on this website, call the OIG Hotline at 1-800-MTA-IG4U (1-800-682-4448), or write to or visit the OIG at Two Penn Plaza, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10121.

Q: Can I file a service-related complaint directly with an MTA agency?

A: Service related complaints (including employee performance/behavior) can be registered directly with the agency involved via their website or by calling the following telephone numbers:

However, if you have a systemic service problem or you have not received a response from the agency regarding your complaint, please contact OIG via the complaint form on this website, email, or by telephone.

If you are experiencing difficulty with your MetroCard, you should contact a customer service representative directly at 1-212-638-7622. If you are having problems with your EZPass tag, you should contact a representative directly by calling 1-800-333-8655.

Q: Is the OIG part of the MTA Police Department?

A: No. The New York State Legislature created the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), in 1983 to provide independent oversight of the operations of the MTA and its constituent agencies. The MTA Police Department is itself part of MTA Headquarters and provides security and incident response for Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road.

Q: Does the OIG investigate individuals or companies that conduct business with the MTA?

A: Yes. The OIG may investigate any individual or entity that either is actually doing business with the MTA or which, through the submission of an application, bid or proposal, expresses a current interest in doing business with the MTA or any of its constituent agencies.
